Overview

Datacenters are the infrastructure that supports most modern applications. In this course, we will cover many aspects of datacenter operations from applications and their performance requirements, to systems, protocols, and hardware that deliver such performance. We will also explore the different systems needed to allow for sharing resources of such large-scale infrastructure.

Grading

• Paper summaries (15%) - Before each class, you will be assigned one of the papers we will be discussing that class. You should write a 500-word summary of the paper including strengths, weaknesses, and potential extensions of the paper.
• Discussion lead (10%) - Every week, the class will focus on a specific topic in datacenter systems. Discussion leads will present a broad summary of the topic and lead the discussion of the specific papers covered in the topic.
• Participation (5%) - Come to class prepared to discuss the assigned readings (which you can find in the schedule). Also, posting and answering questions on Piazza will count towards your participation.
• Programming Project (70%) - Each student (or group of up to two students) can pick a project related to datacenter networks and systems.

Late Policy

For every late day, students lose 10% of the grade for the late assignment with a maximum of two days.
