Requirement
Compare and contrast the messages of Presidents Franklin Roosevelt (1941) and John Kennedy (1962) to prepare the nation for war. One message was asking for a declaration of war, the other considered by many to be an ultimatum that might result in war. Watch and read these two messages from the links below. Then analyze the two, comparing the formal statements of authority and rationale in each case. FDR's Original Text & Link to Audio Full Video (but with time stamp) - 8:00 President John. F. Kennedy (October 22, 1962) Video of full speech (18:28) Full Text How are the statements similar? How are they different? How was each received? What was the significance of each? The paper should be between 500 and 1,000 words, prepared according to the format in the links aat the bottom of the page. You may write it as a narrative or in an outline format. The paper should contain references to at least three outside resources that are cited and document in end notes according to the formatting guidance. All resources must be available online. You may (and should) cite passages from the speech links provided, but those will not count toward your required minimum. While Wikipedia is a great place to start learning about a topic, it also may not be counted as a resource, nor can comments made by your instructor in class. Your document must be submitted as a Word-compatible document by e-mail to your instructor NLT the time and date specified at the top of this page. Preparation Your challenge will be to organize your thoughts carefully before starting to prepare your paper. Consider writing an outline while doing your research with each bullet in the outline a major point you want to make. Think of each major bullet as a topic (lead) sentence for each paragraph of your paper. The use of this telegraphic or bullet format is encourages (and actually preferred) for your final paper. I am more interested in your knowledge of the subject and your ability to organize that knowledge than in extended prose. DOCUMENT YOUR FACTS. This is a research paper, and you are expected to do research on this topic. Any statement that is not yours needs to be documented in an end note. Ground Rules for the Submission READ THIS SECTION VERY CAREFULLY! The paper must be submitted electronically. Your work must be submitted as a Word-compatible document (.doc or .docx) to my e-mail address, Subject: Paper 1, by the deadline stated above. Name the document LastName-Paper1.doc (or .docx) where "LastName" is your last name. The paper should not exceed 1,000 words (four to five pages of double-spaced type, 11-12 pt. font) plus documentation notes starting on a separate page. Again, you are encourage to use a telegraphic (outline) format for this report. You do not need a title page. Place your document title and full name centered at the beginning of your text. Your last name needs to be in the upper right corder of each subsequent page. Number each page after the first at the center of the footer. DOCUMENT YOUR FACTS. This is a research paper, and I intend for you to do some research on these topics. Any statement that is not yours needs to be documented in your end notes on a separate page at the end of your paper. All of your sources must be online. With all the Internet -- especially Google books, Ebscohost, JSTOR, other databases -- there are plenty of resources available. Use the GT library search engines! The format for your documentation should conform with the guidance provided at the end of this page. Collaboration Recognizing that discussing a issue can enhance understanding, I encourage you to talk with your classmates about the central issues of this paper. However, when you begin preparing the paper, paricularly the selection and use of resources and the articulation of the themes of your argument, the work should be your own.
